The Most Underappreciated Marketing Position

Greetings, aspiring marketers! Today, we’re going to talk about a role that has become the backbone of modern businesses: the social media manager. Contrary to popular belief, this role is not a junior position that can be filled by just anyone.

In fact, I dare say that running a social media account is now a more critical job than managing media relations. Shocking, I know! But, allow me to explain why.
First, let’s talk about return on investment (ROI). A skilled social media manager can significantly improve your company’s ROI in various ways.

Here’s a breakdown:
1. Recruiting: A strong social media presence can help attract top talent, resulting in higher quality inbound applications and a better pipeline.

2. Fundraising: Social media can open doors to a plethora of potential investors, allowing you to reach out to tier 1 investors directly and make your pitch without overtly pitching.

3. Sales: By creating engaging content, your social media manager can draw in more inbound customers, increase brand awareness, and ultimately close more deals.

4. Overall narrative shaping: With the general public and press on social media, your social media manager can shape your company’s narrative, discuss/debate things publicly, and create a strong brand image.

On the flip side, a mediocre social media manager can lead to disastrous consequences, such as embarrassment, brand dilution, mission drift, and missed opportunities. Picture this: A social media manager who uses hashtags excessively (#likeseveryword) or prioritizes maximizing engagement over maintaining a consistent narrative (e.g., “I’m sick of this job” – not exactly the message you want to send to potential customers, right?).

Now, let’s address the elephant in the room: compensation. Many companies still underpay and undervalue social media managers, treating the role as an entry-level position. This is a huge mistake! Instead of settling for someone who seems underqualified, double the pay and recruit someone who seems overqualified for the job. Trust me; the ROI will be worth it.

In conclusion, social media managers are the unsung heroes of the marketing world. By harnessing the power of social media platforms, these professionals can significantly impact recruiting, fundraising, sales, and public relations. So, show your social media manager some love and give them the recognition (and pay) they deserve!
