From McKinsey & Company’s recent Gen AI report:

“We predict that automation enabled by all Al technologies could increase global productivity by 0.2-3.3% from 2023 to 2040.”

Anticipating the Impact: AI Automation and Global Productivity

In the realm of B2B marketing, the projection that AI-powered automation could enhance global productivity by a modest 0.2-3.3% between 2023 and 2040 might appear as a significant understatement. Indeed, this seemingly conservative estimate becomes strikingly apparent when we consider the astounding strides made in AI capabilities over the past two years, spanning from 2021 to 2023.

The exponential growth in AI technology has been nothing short of monumental. It’s impossible to disregard the substantial financial investments that have poured into this arena, resulting in soaring valuations for unicorns like Anthropic and Cohere, just to name a few. Against this backdrop, the notion of extrapolating the exceptional two-year progress into two decades, yielding a potential global productivity boost, is nothing short of intriguing, if not downright bewildering.

Delving into the near future, the 2030s are poised to usher in a transformative era where a substantial portion of First World inhabitants will find themselves immersed in AI-created environments. Presently, a significant portion of our daily screen time is dedicated to engaging with content conjured by algorithms, spanning platforms like Netflix, TikTok, and LinkedIn’s curated feeds. However, the forthcoming landscape portends a shift toward AI-driven experiences that surpass the allure of the physical world by astronomical proportions.

Work, education, relaxation, and entertainment will undergo a metamorphosis, with AI-generated environments offering immersive experiences that far exceed the appeal of the “real” world. As a consequence, the tangible world may find itself relinquishing the majority of human attention spans. This impending transition is poised to redefine human relationships and society on a scale that dwarfs the cumulative social changes of the past two centuries.

In this context, the anticipation of a modest 0.2-3.3% increase in global productivity seems almost incongruous. The world appears to be hurtling towards a paradigm shift of monumental proportions, one that may leave it woefully unprepared for the impending transformation.

That is the understatement of the century, indeed.
